If you have written an outdoor-themed book in the past four years, the purpose of this letter is to ask you to join me and donate a copy of your book to create a new library of outdoors books at a town largely incinerated by fire and now rebuilding.
In late 2014 in Northern California, a wildfire swept through the town of Weed – one of America’s best areas for fishing, hunting and all outdoors recreation -- and burned 157 homes, 8 commercial buildings, two churches and the town’s library. A total of 14 fire crews with 453 firefighters with air support fought the blaze.
We are now rebuilding.
Earlier this year, with the Rotary Clubs of Mount Shasta and Weed, we raised $5,000 to help restore the Weed Library. The donations purchased computers, desks, tables and related furniture items at the library's new home at a former bank, arranged with a $1 per year lease.
Now we’re taking a fresh step.
To create a traffic builder at the new library and appeal to the outdoors nature of its residents and children – including people who do not typically visit libraries – we are creating a special section of outdoor-themed books. With donations from outdoors authors, we hope to create the best library of outdoor-themed books in America.
The town is in a rural area at the foot of 14,179-foot Mount Shasta and surrounded by national forests and vast wilderness areas. Many residents are passionate anglers and hunters, and all outdoor activities are popular. In addition to fishing and hunting, that includes, hiking, camping, boating, nature and landscape photography, kayaking, rafting, canoeing, mountain climbing, trekking, wildlife watching, RV camping, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and touring.
To make this new outdoors library happen, please join me and send your book to:

In 1988, the OWAA conference was held in Redding, 60 miles to the south, and many OWAA members took part in adventures in the region. Like me, you may have created a bond with the Mount Shasta region, and look forward for an opportunity to support an area devastated by wildfire.
